I adopt conversation analysis to examine the ways in which participants co-construct (dis)alignment and (dis)affiliation through various semiotic resources (e.g., question-and answer, silence, intra/inter-turn code-switching).
Focusing on couples’ interaction, these general questions guide my research:
What social and/or conversational meanings do couples convey in conversation?
How does the negotiation of (dis)alignment and (dis)affiliation reflect their relationship?
What are some meanings beyond the negotiation of (dis)alignment and (dis)affiliation?
Title of ongoing project:
“Shall we talk? Negotiating affective reciprocity, (dis)affiliation, and (dis)alignment in couple’s conflicts”
